The Department of Visceral, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Dresden is one of the leading surgical departments for cancer treatment in Europe. Our Surgical Research Lab implemented within the department links molecular science with patient oriented, translational research. The lab is part of several research initiatives joining oncological and stem cell labs on the Dresden University Campus, including the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) and the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG). Additionally strong collaborations with Else-Kröner Fresenius center (EKFZ) as well as National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) are held.

Starting at the next possible point, we are looking for a

PhD-Student (f/m/x)
in translational research of gastrointestinal (GIT) tumor entities

This part-time position is initially limited to 24 months. A longer-term cooperation is being sought. Remuneration is in accordance with the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L).

Within the Surgical Research Lab, our group focuses on translational research of gastrointestinal (GIT) tumor entities. Mainly, molecular spectroscopy methods are used to characterize GIT tumors in lab environment and intraoperatively. Complimentary experiments are performed using human 3D cancer cultures (organoids). We are interested in the particular tumor biology of cancer subtypes and optimal chemotherapy treatment response. Furthermore, research questions, e.g. clinical outcome predictions, are tackled using Artificial Intelligence models in strong collaboration systems. The offered position is funded by the Wilhelm Sander Stiftung.

Your tasks:
• Molecular spectroscopy of GIT cancer tissue and organoid cultures including biochemical analysis, partly within operation room environment
• Supervision/organization of biosampling and biobanking of tissue samples
• Genetic, molecular and immunohistochemical characterization/subtyping of cancer and organoid material
• Analysis of organoid in vivo models of GIT cancer
• Test treatment response towards in vitro chemotherapy treatment

Your profile:
• MSc or equivalent in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, medicine or related sciences
• practical experience in lab work

We are seeking for a highly motivated PhD candidate with a strong passion for translational science interested in working in a dynamic team. International experience and excellent English language skills are beneficial. Applicants are encouraged to send their CV, names and phone numbers of two referees if possible.
